Description

KONKYLIE (Conch) pendant by Louis Weisdorf in 1963 and produced by LYFA from 1964-65 - Iconic Danish mid-century design - extremely attractive gold-anodized masterpiece!

12 thin gold-anodized metal slats elegantly bent, intertwined and placed on small orange spacers to form a large conch-like shape, with two-colored inside, yellow and orange for a warm reflection. The visually simple and extremely appealing form, hides a complex structure underneath the hood, and creates an absolutely amazing light when lit - the light is guided out between the slats, making the two-colored inside glow and the gold-anodized outer shine even more.

The KONKYLIE was the first lighting design by Louis Weisdorf, designed in 1963 and put into production by LYFA in 1964-65. It was produced in four colors combinations; gold-anodized with two-colored inside (yellow and orange), silver-anodized with blue and red inside, silver-anodized with white inside and finally a monochrome version in light grey. The light was rather expensive to produce and LYFA marketed it as a prestige light, so there was never produced and sold large quantities of the KONKYLIE.

Originally designed for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen with gold-anodized outer and two-colored inner (yellow and orange), hanging from the trees, and contributing to the magical light at Tivoli Gardens after dark - a small number are still hanging from the trees in Tivoli Gardens.
Partly inspired the Moon by Verner Panton, especially the method Panton used to mount the slats, Weisdorf wanted to design a pendant based on repeating geometric elements. The conch-like shape completely conceals the bulb, creating a glare-free experience - a key pillar of Weisdorf's ideas on good lighting design. His unique sense of form, function and aesthetics, characterized by sculptural elegance with great lighting design qualities, often brought great international attention, the KONKYLIE was no exception.
