PH 5 - 4 1/2 PENDANT BY POUL HENNINGSEN, LOUIS POULSEN

Professional seller: Danish Vintage Design

1.130 EUR / 1.370 USD

Description

PH 5-4½ is a beautiful large top tier Danish design piece, made for high hanging. Originally designed by the "Master of Light" himself - Poul Henningsen, for Louis Poulsen.

The PH 5-4½ pendant is a four screen lamp. Poul Henningsen (PH) designed the three-screen system as early as 1925-1926, when the first lamps were drawn for an exhibition in Paris. Throughout his life PH sought to create the perfect glare-free light - directing light where it is needed while casting soft shadows.
In 1931 the 4-screen system was launched, in order to create a fixture that could be mounted high up and thus provide an alternative to the frequently used chandeliers. The PH 4-shade lamp was designed to increase the amount of light emitted horizontally from the lamp, thereby providing more lighting on walls and shelves, than the ordinary 3-shade lights.
It was taken out of the Louis Poulsen standard product range in the 40s, but was re-designed in 1979 by two Danish architects Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen for the exhibition building Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, in a larger size: PH 6½-6. In 1984, the smaller version PH 5-4½ was designed for the Concert Hall in Århus.

This piece I have for sale it the vintage edition PH 5-4½ in stylish white with blue reflection shade. It was produced in the 1980s (seen on the almost non-existing Louis Poulsen sticker inside the top), and it is in very good vintage condition with very very few signs of usage and age (a couple of superficial marks). Please see the photos!
