TURBO WHITE PENDANT BY LOUIS WEISDORF LYFA 1965

Professional seller: Danish Vintage Design

1.210 EUR / 1.470 USD

Description

TURBO I - white pendant by Louis Weisdorf in 1965 and produced by LYFA from 1967 - EXTREMELY RARE vintage edition. Super attractive Danish Mid-Century design masterpiece!

12 thin aluminum lamellae elegantly spiral twisted and intertwined to form a large sphere-like shape, all lacquered matte white. The sphere-like shape is stabilized by three metal wires inside.
The visually simple and extremely appealing form hides the complex structure underneath the hood and creates an absolutely amazing light when lit - the light is guided between the lamellae and out of the open top and bottom, leaving a spiral light pattern onto the ceiling and underneath the pendant, while the ambiance is colored in a soft warm tone.
The TURBO was designed in 1965 by Louis Weisdorf and put into production by LYFA in 1967. It was produced in two sizes; TURBO I (13.8" / 35 cm in diameter), which was available in orange, red, beige or white and TURBO II (23.6" / 60 cm), available in white.
The shape was partly inspired by Japanese rice-paper lanterns and their expression of lightness - but in my personal opinion the shape resembles the inner workings of a jet engine, especially when looking at the pendant from underneath.
The shape completely conceals the bulb mount, creating a glare-free experience - a key pillar of Weisdorfs ideas on good lighting design. His unique sense of form, function and aesthetics, characterized by sculptural elegance with great lighting design qualities, often brought great international attention, the TURBO was no exception. It was recognized with an iF product design award in 1973 and remained in production until the merger between LYFA and Fog & Mørup.

In 1991 a new version of the TURBO, named Regina, was released by the further-merged company Lyskær-LYFA - without approval of Louis Weisdorf, who took the company the court and won. In 2013 the Danish company Gubi, relaunched this true design gem in collaboration with Louis Weisdorf - in the two original sizes but only in white.
