Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto

The Finnish architect and designer Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) became known internationally as one of Functionalism's pioneers early in his career and is considered as one of the most prominent figures in Nordic Functionalism. When Alvar Aalto graduated from Helsinki University of Technology in 1921 the ideal in architecture was still classical. Alvar Aalto began experimenting with functionalism and found inspiration in some of the classical thoughts such as simplicity and symmetry. Alvar Aalto was in particular recognized for his approach to functionalism with a focus on the human body and his way of making the architectural Modernism's stringent forms soft and more organic. At the beginning of his career, Alvar Aalto worked with architecture, but later he added furniture design and glass art as disciplines too. The work of Alvar Aalto has resulted in the Paimio chair, the 901 serving table and the famous Collection glass vase for Iittalla.
