Axel Johannes Salto (1889-1961) is an internationally known Danish ceramist. Axel Salto graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and initially pursued a career as a painter. However, it was not art that made him recognized in Denmark and internationally. He became known for his work with ceramic and stoneware. His career as a ceramist took off at The International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris 1925. Axel Salto found inspiration in nature, as seen in the knotted, budding and rifled style, which are some of the common features of his work.
