Description

GE 240, Cigar chair by Hans J Wegner for Getama in 1955 - Iconic easy chair in stained oak with yellow wool cushions, in very good vintage condition.

The GE 240 or Cigar chair is a gorgeous low easy chair with dark coco stained oak frame, metal springs and yellow wool foam cushions. The simple, yet striking expression demands prefect craftsmanship and an intimate knowledge of wood joinery. The wide sculptured armrests giving you sublime support for the arms, the angled rounded legs ensuring the perfected backward tilted seating position and the beautiful backrest enabling (almost demanding) you to place it freely in a room to show if off. To ensure comfortable seating, the cushions are made of foam and as protection from the underlying metal springs, it is fitted with a new piece of teal linen.

Wegner designed more than 500 chairs, of which 100 were put into mass production. The GE 240 were introduced for the first time at a furniture exhibition in 1954 and put into production by 1955. It became of one of most popular easy chairs produced by Getama and remained in production for several years. The production ceased at some point (we are uncertain when!) but was back in Getama's 2017 product range.

Its backward tilted seating and wide cigar-shaped armrests makes for a really comfortable easy chair, and combined with its beautiful silhouette, the GE 240 is an excellent showpiece example of 1950s Danish design. On this piece, the yellow cushions, really makes you notice the detailed wood joinery and beautifully contrasts the dark coco stained oak frame.

This beautiful vintage Cigar chair would fit in anywhere in the modern home, as a lounge chair, easy chair, or as an accent chair in your favorite area. It is the vintage oak version, gently restored and reconditioned (dark coco oil staining, and silk soft sanding), and it is in very good vintage condition with very few normal signs of usage and age. The custom-made cushions are newer and show only very few signs of usage. Please see the photos!
